The New Luxury In Interior Design

So many times when reading Interior Design journals and magazines you will have noticed expressions like ‘luxury lifestyle’, ‘luxury living’ and ‘luxury homes’. But what exactly do they denote?

We often get clients asking us for a luxury home design, or, others will choose to purchase our luxury home decor products. As time has gone by and especially with the COVID pandemic changing our lives, I just wanted to dive into, “what does luxury actually mean in 2020”?

“Some people think luxury is the opposite of poverty. It is not. It is the opposite of vulgarity”.

Coco Chanel

Luxury has always and will always be linked to wealth. However, there is definitely a shift in what the expectations of having a luxurious house means in 2020. The old luxury was all about the glitz, glamour & everything shiny; the more gold plated bathroom taps, crystal tiles & diamonds on chandeliers the better.

However, today, when a client wants a luxurious home design, it is not so extravagant in its appearance. The new luxury places more emphasis on sustainability, equality, connection, values and uniqueness in the design and products, instead of how glamorous things look.

“Time and silence are the most luxurious things today”.

Tom Ford

Interior Design catered towards the ‘High-end ‘ market is more than arranging sofas and cushions to somebody else’s preconceived pattern of symmetry. Instead, it is about bringing forth the real light that shines within us all — authenticity… The authentic design is a canvas for creativity, inspiration, and exploration. Here are just some of the shifts we have seen in our affluent client’s requests when designing a luxury home design.

Sustainability

More and more high-end clients are willing to pay extra for products where materials and the manufacturing of the products has been undertaken in the UK. ‘Where’ the product was made, is on top of the list for our clients. In today’s world, we are much more aware of how damaging it is for products to be shipped across the world, when we have such talented craftspeople right here on our doorstep!

There has also been a surge of clients wanting to ‘upscale’ existing products instead of buying new items. Vintage products add so much more character and interest to a space. We are really enjoying incorporating these items into our designs and have discovered amazing talented people who can revamp old items into new.

Craftsmanship

The feeling of being able to meet with the person who is making a particular piece for your home; seeing the workshop; the quality of the craftsmen detailing, really is something that new luxury is all about. A bespoke, quality product that is unique, exclusive for the client is what luxury today is all about.

Customisation

A high-end interior designer listens to a client’s vision and translates that into a one-of-a-kind look where every aspect is made to create the perfect end product, consisting of a well-balanced design scheme. Off-the-shelf furniture and accessories can be luxury, but to truly have a “perfect fit” design, customisation is the way to go for luxury interior design.

An everlasting trend

Whether old or new luxury – the price tag is still a hefty one. This is why it is important that the design and product choices are ones that will last for years to come. The quality of products is required to be of the highest standard, so that the items can be passed through generation, after generation if that is the desired result. When we are creating our designs, this is something we envisage to do, as we are completely aware of the costs associated with luxurious designs and want your purchases to be like an investment, to be something we help you pass through your family generations, as do other luxury brands.

“You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation”.

Space

Space has become a luxury of its own in the whole lockdown living. As expected there has been a huge rise in additional rooms and spaces being added to homes of our affluent clients. The most popular addition that we have seen is the increase of gyms, swimming pools and outdoor living spaces being added to homes.

With our lives changing so much over the last few months, there is nothing more lavish then having ‘space’ for our daily activities. The focus is now on wellbeing and tremendous thought is being given in creating tranquil spaces bringing together families.

The creation of door openings, that merge the indoor and outdoor spaces together has been very popular. In busy parts of London and in other parts of the country where outdoor space is limited, we have been creating indoor spaces which are inspired by the outdoors. The usage of beautiful plants with so many amazing nature-inspired products that are available it has been an adventure of its own!

In Conclusion…

Real luxury living cannot ever truly be given a specific definition. It’s a natural process that sets about deep within the soul and blooms through our everyday lifestyle choices. It is unique to its keeper and should reflect them as throughout.

In order for us to provide you with a gorgeous home, we ensure we get to know you as an individual and follow the lead from there. Our homes are at the centre of our lives like never before, so let us help you create a space which you will cherish for years to come.

A well-executed luxury interior design plan flows effortlessly from one room to the next. That is not to say the colour palette stays exactly the same, which to some clients, would be boring. A refined design plan has unifying elements that carry through the whole home, varied slightly in each room to suit its specific function and purpose. This takes an expert’s eye to achieve. Whatever your views on luxury are – get in touch and we will love to help you to achieve this.
